Alex Albon F1 news

Albon will start his fourth season with Williams in 2025. Compared to 2023, he had a very disappointing season in 2024 and was regularly outperformed by former teammate Franco Colapinto. With the arrival of the experienced Carlos Sainz, Alexander Albon has a strong competitor within the team. How will the Thai-British driver perform in 2025?

Alex Albon F1

The son of a former British Touring Car Championship driver, Nigel Albon, Alex Albon was always meant to be a racing driver. He began racing karts at the age of eight, accumulating several prominent titles including first in the 2010 CIK-FIA European Championship in the KF3 category.

Albon would then spend three years racing in the Formula Renault 2.0 series before moving to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, placing seventh overall in 2015. The British-Thai driver established himself as a future Formula 1 star when he finished second in the 2016 GP3 Series, behind current Ferrari driver and teammate at ART Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc. Albon continued with ART in Formula 2 in 2017, though he endured a difficult year and finished 10th in the standings. 
 

Alex Albon to Toro Rosso

A move to DAMS in 2018 resulted in a much improved season, with Albon ending the campaign third overall in the standings behind George Russell and Lando Norris. This attracted the attention of Red Bull who, after Daniel Ricciardo's defection to Renault, needed a driver at Toro Rosso to replace the promoted Pierre Gasly. Despite having agreed a deal to compete in Formula E, Albon managed to sign with the Red Bull F1 stable and gain a drive alongside Daniil Kvyat for the 2019 season.

The youngster impressed during his time at Toro Rosso, with sixth place at the German Grand Prix being his best result. His performances, coupled with Gasly struggling at Red Bull, resulted in the drivers being swapped, starting from the Belgian Grand Prix. Albon had a good start to his Red Bull stint, and was on course to finish on the podium at the Brazilian Grand Prix before an incident with Lewis Hamilton dropped him to last.

Albon began the 2020 campaign strongly, though a similar incident with Hamilton at the season-opener in Austria cost him his first podium once again. Despite eventually finishing on the podium at the Tuscan Grand Prix and again at the Bahrain Grand Prix, he was demoted to the role of reserve and test driver for 2021, with Sergio Perez taking his race seat. 
 

Alex Albon to Williams 2022

Following a year on the sidelines, Albon was given an opportunity to return to the F1 grid for 2022 when he was signed by the Williams team. The British-Thai driver replaces Russell, who has moved to Mercedes, and will line up alongside Nicholas Latifi at the Grove-based squad.

After scoring points just three races into his Williams career, Albon went on to make numerous Q3 appearances throughout the season for the team and impressed again with a points finish at the Miami and Belgium Grands Prix.

For 2023 he lines up with rookie and American Logan Sargeant. Also in 2024, Albon drives for the British Formula 1 team, but starting from the Dutch Grand Prix, he will race alongside Franco Colapinto.

After a season of significant damage, disappointing results, and technical issues, Albon will hopefully be able to perform better in 2025.
